Here's one that shows dramatic accumulation without price rise, a hallmark of Wyckoff situations.

note: although there appears to be "streak up" in July, the bottom fishing scan in a previous post ( "A scan to spot strong buyer interest near 52 week lows" ) doesn't pick it up because it contains a couple of equal closes that interrupt the streak. Unfortunate.

This story was in the news lately (Nasdaq MarketBeat) :

" The long-running mystery around Warren Buffett’s latest stealth investment is finally over. In Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE: BRK.B) newest 13F filing, the Oracle of Omaha revealed a fresh stake in UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE: UNH). Berkshire ended Q2 holding five million shares, valued at about $1.6 billion, a position it likely began building quietly in the prior quarter after requesting permission from regulators to accumulate shares without triggering a rush of buying....David Tepper picked up 2.27 million shares, while Renaissance Technologies added 1.35 million shares... "

Here's a chart of UNH showing its (simplified) Wyckoff characteristics:

The essence of Wyckoff is that knowledgeable big money accumulates a big stake in a sold out but promising stock without raising the price too much. They first let the stock come to them from discouraged late sellers. Then they begin to actively buy, raising the price as little as possible. If they attract a following, they discourage it by strategically shorting what they have bought until the short term oriented outsiders get discouraged and leave. Once they have their stake, and the followers are gone, they begin the mark up by advertising the stock with a few days of buying, which with no more sellers after the followers are gone, runs up easily. Then the good news comes along ( in this case, its just that Buffet bought) and the stock is on its way.

You don't really need to know all the technical aspects of the Wyckoff method. The essence shows up in the Force indicator moving mostly up faster while price is flat or down more than Force. It works best when price hangs out in a range above its most recent low, while Force rises. Then things go quiet, or the price low gets tested, and then price breaks out.

Not every operation works. Even the smart money can be wrong.

p.s.

UNH seems to be progressing in the mark up stage after a period of consolidation following the last post.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to ask you for clarification regarding StockCharts adjusted data;

I have performed backtests on a number of data (including stock price, stop, target, high/low) and have realized that this adjustment is made automatically when a chart is opened. I'm surprised that this adjustment is automatic and I have the impression that this has misled the results, especially as some of the backtested data goes back several decades. Do you think I should use the unadjusted data for backtesting and redo, or does it make no difference?

Thank you very much for your answers,

Have a nice day!

I have a few questions about swing trading:

1. What is considered a good return (monthly) on the trading capital in swing trading?

2. What is the sum of an effective swing trading account?

3. What is a typical swing trading routine? making scans and entering trades daily or once a week?

4. What to do after a reversal in an up-trending market when the market enters a correction (pullback)? Do you wait for that second reversal to go long again or enter a short trade in a stock that is in a downtrend (despite the market being in an uptrend)?

Thank you very much,

When I run my momentum scans for stocks they generated stocks with great looking charts, high SCTR, high relative strength etc. However I have started to check the scan results against the Fidelity Stock Screener equity summary score from Thompson Reuters Starmine which gives an aggregate fundamental analysis rating of bullish, neutral, or bearish based on the sum of opinions of about 10 analyst firms rating on a stock.
Interestingly enough a significant number of the stocks generated by my momentum scans have bearish Starmine ratings. This brings up the question of when you are trading is it sufficient to only rely on technical analysis scans for generating trades. Why ignore the other half of the equation- fundamental analysis?
I now check every trade of any type(momentum, pullback, breakout, etc) that my scans generate against the Thompson Reuters Starmine rating and only invest in stocks with a bullish or neutral rating and discard those with bearish ratings. I just don't feel comfortable investing in a stock with a bearish rating even though the charts and technical indicators look great.
Stockcharts.com as far as I can tell offers no ability to check out the ranking of a stock based on fundamental analysis. It would seem to me that as Gatis Roze says " you want the wind at your back when you are trading- strong sector, strong industry, strong stock" that you would also want to include "strong fundamentals". Is this a deficiency in the entire Stockcharts.com methodology?
I would estimate that most of the subscribers to Stockcharts.com are involved in trading and the Stockcharts advanced scan engine is a wonderful tool. But why not make it even better by adding some sort of fundamental analysis ranking ability to it? The only reason I can see for not doing this is if the people who run Stockcharts think fundamental analysis is completely worthless and the charts tell you everything. Is that the case? Is fundamental analysis completely worthless?
I have felt more secure in my trading now that I am using the Starmine fundamental analysis rankings to my trading criteria. I am interested in what other members of the stockcharts.com community think about this subject.

I have been doing PnF charting for about 12 years now. I have certain strategies that I have developed over the years and I am always looking for ways to improve. Books and additional online information are always giving me different advice on how to invest. I would like to post several PnF scenarios giving you my ideas for discussion. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

On this first scenario (0010 ERO.TO) I would have bought half the position on the TripleTop Breakout at 26.00 and place a sell stop order at the Double Bottom Sell at 21.00. As @lmkwin has suggested, I would fill the position on a confirmed pullback (reversal to O and back to X) on the smaller scale using the 3%x2 Close Only as the final decision maker on a buy.

How do I add the following criteria?

Stock has closed higher in each of the last 5 sessions?
and [streak up (close) = 5]
Is that correct?

Also, how do I add a criteria that says:
Stock closed at a 10-Day Low in Price
and [low = min(10, low)]
Is that correct?
